The Annual Dinner is the primary fund-raising event for the Society's K-12 Life-Science Educational Programs and Public Outreach Activities. Donations and sponsorships are tax-deductible and all net proceeds directly fund these initiatives.
Dr. Ward has been involved with vaccine and infectious disease research for 35 years and has published extensively on the subject. He now serves as an independent consultant and lecturer worldwide and will delivery a Keynote Address on "A Perspective on Infectious Disease Research in the 21st Century".
Dr. Ward received his degrees in Microbiology and Medicine at UCLA, and he completed his Pediatrics training at Boston Children’s Hospital and his Infectious Disease training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (Harvard School of Medicine). He returned to UCLA in 1980, and in 1987 founded the UCLA Center for Vaccine Research at LABioMed, serving as its director until 2005. In collaboration with Kaiser-Permanente and others the Center evolved to be one of the larger medical research programs at UCLA, and contributed to the development and evaluation of vaccines for H. influenza, S. pneumoniae, N. meningititis, Influenza, Rotavirus, Pertussis, Hepatitis, Herpes and several combination vaccines.
Dr. Ward has worked at the Centers for Disease Control; World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland ; and the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Korea, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics; American Pediatric Society; Pediatric Infectious Disease Society; American Epidemiologic Society; American Society of Microbiology; and the Infectious Disease Society of America. He has served on many local, national and international immunization advisory committees, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
